Two shoplifters in Utah, USA had the tables turned on them as their getaway car was attacked by opportunistic thieves while they were being arrested in a shop.

Korin Vanhouten, 47, and Eldon Alexander, 36, had parked outside a WinCo shop in Ogden, Utah and gone in to steal a few items.

The pair had lifted make-up, batteries, energy bars and cotton swabs but were spotted and arrested by local policeman Lieutenant Tony Fox.

Lt. Fox cited the pair for shoplifting and when he let them go, they returned to their parked car, only to find it had been broken into and their belongings stolen.

The pair then called the policeman back to report the new crime.

The thieves had made off with cigarettes, a stereo amplifier and a drum machine altogether valued at around $60 (£38).

The items which Vanhouten and Alexander had attempted to shoplift were worth around $26 (£16).

Lt Fox said that he had never seen anything like it in his whole career.
